         Furniture Making

I am very fortunate in having access to some very beautiful wood. Living in southern Scotland means that I have splendid examples of Oak, Elm, Sycamore, Italian Alder, Yew and I am close enough to enjoy an occasional border raid to gather some English Walnut. I have some splendid, very old Larch that I shall use for infrastructure of pieces as well as the base wood for veneer.

I am practised and trained in the art of making classical, vernacular and contemporary furniture for interior and exterior use. I have a simple approach to making. I have an extensive library and if a customer is unsure of what they might like exactly they are welcome to browse my books covering furniture through the ages. If there is a germ of an idea then, in consultation, I shall form a design, perhaps making a small model and then agree on the wood(s) that will make up the piece, the finish and the exact sizes. I shall supply a fixed price quote which I shall honour as long as there are no huge mid-stream changes. During the making some new, subtle detailing may come to the fore and I shall absorb these within the fixed price.

I am happy to have customers visit whilst a piece is being made but, generally, I discourage it as many pieces of furniture look pretty tired and rough whilst under construction. Experience has taught me that seeing them in this condition can often dull the joy of the piece being delivered. I shall always make an exception to that if there is something that need to be discussed about the development of a particular piece.
